3 out of 5 stars Disappointing build quality   August 7, 2010

I bought two AG3 (external airline version) around Oct 2009, so I have used them for about 10 months now. I have been growing salad exclusively, on 3rd season right now. My conclusion thus far is that this is a toy not a real appliance. It works amazingly well for what it's for, when it works...

The seed germinates about the same speed as if you use a Jiffy peat pod, but the rate which it grows is amazing, it will gain an inch a day. If you use everything OEM, light bulb, seed kit, nutrient packets, then by my calculation, I was roughly breaking even. This is more fun, clean and I can pick it for salad or sandwich anytime I need it, plus we no longer need a night light in the living room. I had planned all along to reuse the growing basket, use my own seed, sponge and liquid nutrient once the OEM supplies runs out, so that it would be more cost effective. I would have given it 5 stars at this point and I had recommended it to a friend after one month.

My AG3s was pretty quiet, you had to put your ears right up against it to hear the hum from the pump. My boyfriend has pretty sensitive hearing, we have ours in our living room and it didn't bother him. So I didn't quite understand why when my friend, whom bought one at my recommendation, told me it was too loud for him to keep it at home.

Some of the seed kit didn't germinate well, often 1 out of 3 would fail or get moldy etc. Mostly this is due to randomness of where seed is located in the pod relative to water. AeroGarden seed kits has 100% germination guaranty, each time I emailed the customer service about this, they would send me replacements.

At about months 3, the light on one of the AG3 wouldn't come back on any more. I wrote to customer service and they sent me a replacement bulb. Though by the time I received it, about a week after, the light magically came back on.

At about months 6, middle of second season, the pump on both became unbearably loud. My two AG3's growing season are offset by about a month or 2, so this didn't happen at exactly the same time. I emailed them about the first one, they send me a replacement base. At this point I already killed off the salad, so I started a new season with the replacement base, it worked. When I requested replacement base for the second AG3 after it too was having the same problem, they didn't have any more base in stock so they send me a whole new one, version without external airline. I again killed off the salad and started a new season with the new AG3, but this one start out slightly more noisy than the original AG3, noticeable when compared to the other one, since I have them side by side. I figure it's a different model, so maybe different construction, and the slight noise is acceptable, so I just hoped that the upgrade had fixed the original problem. Well guess what? This is only the 3rd day and the pump on my AG3 #3 too became unbearably loud.

So 3/3 of mine has the same problem with bump and my friend is 1/1 on his. I looked around on the net, it seems this is a common problem and the pump is just cheap and poor design. I plan to get a fish tank pump and try a Frankenstein mod on mine after this season ends or until my hearing goes out. I love their customer service, top quality, but that does not make up for the poor construction and poor design of the product. I expected this to be an appliance in my kitchen that I can use for years to come, not a toy that last a few months.

4 out of 5 stars Nice toy but a little too loud   July 7, 2010

I picked this up a couple months ago for Mother's Day at a decent price. It was easy to set up like most people said. One of the pods started sprouting after a week or so. A second pod followed. Nothing ever came out of the third pod though. After almost 2 months, it looks pretty much. The second pod has a lot of flowers, very pretty. My mom comments on it every night and she even took a picture of it to show her coworkers. No flowers from the first pod yet though although it has leaves so far. It makes me wonder how there would be room if something did come out of the third pod.
I'd give it 5 stars if not for the buzzing noise. The thing just buzzes 24 hours a day but we got used to it by now. It'd be perfect if it doesn't buzz. I remember reading a review about doing something to the motor(?) inside so I might try that later on.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!   June 6, 2010

My plants have been growing a couple weeks, and now they're really growing! I can't wait until they're large enough to start flowering. I love aerogarden products, they're great! The only thing about this one is for some reason, it keeps telling me to add nutrients even when I just did! So I have trouble telling when it ACTUALLY needs nutrients. But other than that, for under thirty, this product was a GREAT buy!

1 out of 5 stars A big disappointment   January 30, 2010

I bought this item for my wife for Christmas. Following instructions, the seeds came up, and then turned light green, withered, and died. We have done as the instructions said, and are quite unhappy with the results. We would be willing to give it another try if we could get additional English Garden seed pods, as we originally bought.

We are mature, in our 70's, and not used to complaining, but this kit is certainly not up to expectation.

4 out of 5 stars Optimal indoor flower garden   December 31, 2009

It is a fine product if you don't want to deal with dirt and seeds. It is easy to set up, and not much attention is needed after setting up the system. You can also switch to different seed kit using the same system.
